Threave Castle was built in
the late 14th century by Archibald the Grim, 3rd Earl of Dougla,on a small
island on the River Dee. At this time Threave was the centre of power in
Galloway. Another title for this family was The Black Douglas's.
Location: Threave Castle is to be
found west of Castle Douglas, off the A75, once off the A75 you continue
along a farm track to a parking area at the Kelton Mains Farm. From here
continue on foot along a good path through the farmland for 3/4 of a mile.
Once you come to the paths end a 2 minute boat trip takes across to
Threave Island, on which the castle is sited. All of which makes a visit
to Threave Castle a memorable day out.
