| Caerlaverock Castle as we
see it here dates from the 13th Century, there was an earlier Castle just
a few hundred yards to the south of the present site. It is thought that
the 1st castle was abandoned because of its closeness to the Solway
Marshes. The three sided shield
shaped Caerlaverock we know today was built by the Maxwell family.
Surrounded by a deep moat and ramparts it is surely one of the most
stunning medieval castles in Scotland.
Situation: 8 miles south of
Dumfries on the B725 it is well worth a visit.
