The
Brandsbutt stone was originaly found in pieces with the fragments fitted
into a drystone dyke. The stone now restored thanks to Barratt Homes (who
rescued it from obscurety) sits on the Barratt Estate. A sign can be seen
from the A96 at Inverurie showing its whereabouts. The Brandsbutt Stone
carved between 500 and 900 AD shows a V Rod and Crescent, Above a Z Rod
and Serpant symbles, which are promently incised. To the Left of this is a
long but incomplete inscription in Ogram, an ancient alphabet. The Ogram
reads "Irataddoarens" which has been given the possible link whith
Eddarron, a possible rendering of St Ethernanus, a local saint. |
